Young Sisters

Hey everyone,

My friend Anna from RIT started compiling a book called Young Sisters when she was fourteen years old, in search of the true meaning of womanhood. Its a collection of photographs and experiences celebrating girls. Anna and I have now known each other for seven years and its just been great knowing who was interested in my culture and someone who is so passionate about issues of women and human rights. We worked together for the Asian Culture Society and did many performances together.

Anna asked me to write my story for her book sometime back and now its published in her book. She also chose my picture to put on the cover of her book and now the book is on sale at: http://www.lulu.com/content/1419203

Now Anna produced a play and one of the monologues in the play was based on a part of my story. The clip can be viewed at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-nhKHRmOa8

I really feel honored that someone would actually use my story in a play. Yay!! This is exciting and made my day!

Giggle, Laugh, Play, Eat, Dance, Enjoy, Celebrate

A whole bunch of verbs...and a whole lot of fun. I think the title of this blog entry sums up my entire weekend. Although the flight to Philly was very long and the airline misplaced one of our baggages, both Kart and I were delighted to see my sister Nupur after five months. On Friday we were busy settling down, exchanging funny stories, and enjoying some lovely home cooked food my mom sent with her. We crashed around 2 pm as Nupur and I had to head out to New York for Mary's Bridal Shower & our girls' night out and Kart had to go to DC for his friend's wedding early next morning.

Morning came and we were late for our bus to China Town. It was quite an experience to get on a bus from there as the bus we were scheduled to take was no where in sight and no one would help us to find it. We finally just paid for another ticket and got onto the bus for NYC. The ride was fun as both Gugs and I were catching up, making phone calls and just talking about what all we would do in the city. Once we got there, the people in China Town were trying to get us back on the bus! We finally made our way through the crowd and tried to locate Jessi and Sanam. Google maps on my iPhone came to our rescue here and were finally able to meet with our friends after a detour.

When we were heading to Chrystie and Canal St intersection to meet Jessi, we missed her until she yelled at us...we looked back and there she was...It was so great to just be together again! Sanam joined us soon after...poor fellow was given wrong directions and also had to take a detour. After many hugs, we decided to head to John's Pizzeria. Now this is no ordinary New York style pizza...I would say its the best pizza ever! The four of us finished 2 pies in less than an hour! After the yummy food, we headed to Sanam's apartment...we were really had to rush coz the Bridal shower was going to start soon, and we still did not have our stuff ready for it. The whole afternoon we were preparing for that evening and finally made our way to Mary and Tom's shinding.

We were late...but not horribly. We got a very warm welcome from Mary, it was so great to see the bride-to-be...The evening had just started. We were introduced by Mary to everyone and were enjoying our food. Following that everyone went around and introduced themselves and had to tell one thing they had common with Mary. Jessi said the funniest thing: how both Mary and Jessi had to "educate" me about the American lingo and culture. There are some funny stories, but there will be another time and place for those.

After introductions, we started doing various fun activities planned by Mary's Maid of Honor, Jean. To start with we had to bring in a recipe and put it in an album for Mary. Following that we were supposed to make scrapbook pages with pictures of us with Mary/Tom. We did not know that it was a competition!! I am sure Mary will love this, coz all the pages came out really well. Jean actually made a Mary-Tom taboo game. The taboo cards had words related to Mary on one side and related Tom on the other. It was a really fun and interactive game which engrossed everyone and was very enjoyable.

The highlight of the evening was a game in which Jean really went all out. She made a video of Tom answering questions about their relationship. Mary was asked a question at the shower and following that we were shown Tom's videotaped answer. It was hilarious and at the same time it was great to see what a great rapport Mary and Tom have. Tom changed his pose with the question and that was just really funny. We were anticipating which pose he will be in for the subsequent question.

Following the games, Mary opened her presents and as the tradition goes we finally put together a hat for her with all the gift wrappings. The toasts followed soon after. We got done around 10 that evening and were now ready for our girls' night out. So once everyone left, Mary, Jessi, Nupur and I were ready to celebrate my wedding last year, Mary and Jessi's upcoming weddings and Nupur's admission to Wharton Business School.

Jessi and I had been planning this for the past week and a half. We arranged for veils, tiaras, sashes, shirts with custom messages, beads, rings, buttons and glow sticks. All of us helped each other get ready and headed to the Sapphire Lounge in the city. Everyone at the club congratulated us and we had a great time dancing. The played some great hip hop music from the recent times and 90s.

After dancing, we headed to Kati Roll Company on MacDougal and Bleecker in the Village and enjoyed some yummy Aloo and Paneer Kati Rolls. I think by now we were all tired and ready to go home! The next morning we woke up early for the fear of missing our bus. Fortunately we were able to catch it and make it to Philly by noon.

The rest of the day was a lazy one where we ate and slept a lot! In the evening Kart got back from DC and both of us watched "Dan in real life". After that we went to hang out with Nupur and her Wharton friends. By the time night came around we were exhausted and ready to pass out so that we could get some rest before our early morning flight.

Reflecting back on the weekend, I realize how much I miss my girls when I am away from them and how much fun we have together. This has been a memorable weekend and I can't wait to celebrate with everyone in August!

Warning: This is extra cheesy and extra sentimental. Read at your own risk.

When you are with them, you realize how lucky you are to have them in your life...When you are not with them, they come find you to share your woes and bring a smile to your face...When you feel their presence in your life, you know everything will be alright...Yes, I am talking about you, My friend!

When I log on to facebook, I see your pokes and wall posts...When I am bored, I see a funny email from you in my inbox which adds some zing to my day...When I am having a bad day, you know from some weird telepathy to call me or IM me and make me feel all better...When its a big day for me, you find the best way to celebrate with me...Yes, you are my true friend.

Let's meet up for lunch today...Let's work on a project together...Let's go for a movie...Let's take a road trip...Let's go to the beach...Let's have a celebration...Let's have a potluck dinner...Let's barbeque together...Let's go roller blading...Let's catch up soon...It is always so much fun to hang out with you!

What a wonderful feeling it is to know that you have them, people who care about you...people who will always stand by you...people who will always play pranks on you...people who will pull you out of your misery...people who will make you laugh....people who are always there to support you...and people you know you can hang out with whenever you want. Yes, it is a great feeling to have you for my friend.

Ladies in their own little world

I don't know if you guys know that since the past year I have been interested in the hobby of scrapbooking. I generally enjoy arts and crafts, and I felt that scrapbooking will give me a good outlet to express myself and also a scrapbook makes a great gift. Yesterday I had an opportunity to attend a class at the Windy City Scrapbooking store in Chicago, a store that I love, with one of the very famous people in the scrapbooking business, Teresa Collins (She has her own line of scrapbooking products and teaches classes all around the US and various craft expos). Let me say this, I DID NOT KNOW WHAT I WAS GETTING INTO.

I went into the class with hopes of meeting some friendly people in various age groups from different cultural backgrounds who are interested in scrapbooking or may be have been pursuing it for a bit. I was hoping to learn a lot not only from the instructor, but also from the ladies who would be attending. I was in for a surprise. The class was around 30 women, all of them were over at least 10 years older than me, mostly soccer moms from the burbs. Not only that, but in my opinion all of them were scrapbooking snobs of the first order.

I must say it was kind of irritating for me to watch these women drool over Teresa Collins and how they were sucking up to her. If Teresa would drop something, each one of them would be eager to pick it up from the floor. Teresa would say something like (these are not her exact words), "Oh and we are coming out with a new line of scrapbooking papers, and they will just be a $0.99. Just look at these, are they not awesome?" And all the ladies would be like "Yay!!!!" or "Wow" or "I am so getting this" or even worse "I already bought so many of these". Man! get a life!! They were just trying to out do each other by saying how many scrapbooking tools and latest supplies they had, especially the ones marketed by Teresa Collins.

I really felt that these hoitie toitie women live in their own little worlds where everything revolves around scrapbooking. They were also mean...the ladies sitting on my table made it a point that they did not give me the stuff that was being passed around to me. On two occasions, the things that were passed around our table and was given to other tables when I had not even had the chance to use the things. I had to wait for the supplies to be given to me later on. And yeah, these women don't smile to you unless you are Teresa Collins.

Towards the end of the class I could not wait to get out. I must say that the only person who was friendly was Teresa's assistant. I felt Teresa herself was just marketing her line of products more than teaching the class I paid a decent amount of money for. I could just finish 5 pages out of the 30 pages we were promised that we would be able to finish during the class.

I don't know if I will ever want to attend such a class again. For me its more a means of relaxation and bringing a smile on the other person's face (to whom you are giving the scrapbook). Its not about being petty, sucking up to people or being snobbish of what you know or you possess. Come on, are we still in highschool? I thought that was ages ago.

Our Trip to Europe

We just got back from a real fun trip to Europe. We spent a total of 10 days visiting the island of Capri (Italy), Florence, Venice, Paris and Rome (in that order). We ended up taking the direct flight to Rome from Philadelphia, which was really comfortable and the food on the plane was actually decent. The day we got to Rome, we took a train to Naples and immediately after reaching Naples, took a boat to Rome. We finally got to Capri in late afternoon.

Capri was beautiful! We had a great view of the Mediterranean sea and the island from our hotel balcony. Neha was in love with the bougainvilla flowers that were right outside the hotel coz they reminded her of her childhood and the bougainvilla vine that was in her house where she grew up in India. The sea was really blue and it was fun to walk along the beach. Another place we visited was San Michele's villa which was a beautiful house with lovely gardens. The owner was actually a doctor and an author who wrote about this villa in his book before the place even existed. Afterwards, he ended up buying the villa and naming it after the villa he wrote about in his book.

Our next stop was Florence, which is a condensed city and a lot of fun to walk around. The best part of Florence is its gelato as it orginated from this city. The highlights of our trip to Florence were Duomo, Dante's House, Uffizzi Gallery, Accademia and their gelato. We actually ended up finding this gelataria suggested by our guide book. It is called Vivoli...as soon as Neha took the first bite of her hazelnut and pistachio gelato, she said, "I am in heaven." It was a real delight for both of us to have such excellend gelato. Kart really enjoyed Dante's House...it was interesting to see the visuals for Dante's interpretation of heaven and hell. Neha was looking forward to looking at Boticelli's work at the Uffizzi gallery. As soon as we entered the Boticelli room numbers 10 - 14, her jaw dropped. She fell in love with two very famous Boticelli paintings: Birth of Venus (the face of Venus from this painting is the splash screen for Adobe Illustrator program) and Primavera. The sheer size, beauty and symbolism of these paintings will have you awestruck. The Accademia had the sculpture of David which was huge and had a great amount of detail. Overall the city is full of priceless art, amazing food and shopping. Its very easy to get around on foot or bus.

After Florence, we headed for Venice. I thought that our cab ride from the station to the hotel was adventurous...the driver was weaving through the traffic, going at 140 km/hr, and sometimes switching two or three lanes on the highway when there were cars right behind or in front. It was remarkable how we did not have an accident even though he was going at really high speeds, when there was not enough room between him and the car in front of him. Kart says that we have to thank European suspensions for that! Regardless, he got us to our hotel in very good time. The major highlight of our Venice trip was how much we walked around, the amount of gelato we ate and how much we explored the Venitian islands. We also had a great time looking at the different and very artistic Venitian masks. Shopping, btw, was great in Venice! And the Gondola ride is not worth it!! The canal is dirty and the Gondoliers don't even sing....waste of 45 minutes of your time! We luckily managed to escape this major touristy time pass for most people who visit Venice, and managed to enjoy and exploring the interiors of islands like San Marco, Santa Croce, San Polo, Cannaregio and even Castello. Piazza San Marco was extremely beautiful and so was the Basilica, which was designed like a Greek church as opposed to the traditional Roman churches, which are in a shape of cross. Its amazing to see the pigeons at the piazza and seems like a scene from a movie.

Our next stop was Paris.....what can we say, we fell in love with the city. The Parisians are not rude...in fact they are extremely helpful! We were looking for our hotel and decided to ask directions from a woman on the street as our last resort. She did not speak English and did not know how to get there, but went inside a florist shop and got directions for us. We thought that that was incredibly sweet of her! Besides everywhere we went, people were friendly and willing to help you out, even if you did not speak French. In Paris, we made most of our two days and visited a number of places ranging from the Arc de Triomphe, Opera House, Concorde, L'Madeline, The Louvre, Luxembourg Gardens, Tuileries, Pantheon and the Eiffel tower. We got to chill at the cafes and have some yummy French desserts (especially Macarons!). One of our highlights of the trip was meet the manager of one of the projects Neha worked on at Britannica, Sebastien. Sebastien showed us a great time in Paris...we had a lot of fun conversation with him about Paris, the French and general way of life in France viz-a-viz the US. The reason we were able to accomplish so much in Paris was because both Sebastien, and two co-workers of Neha's, Thierry and Shawn had given us amazing suggestions on where all to go.

The city we visited last was Rome. By this time we were a little exhausted. We did relax a lot at the cafes in Rome as well...We did not fret about covering everything this time in Rome. Just enjoyed chilling by the Trevi fountain, shopping, eating etc. We did go to the Vatican city, the Colloseum and the Palatine Hill, which were all great.

Overall, we have to say that the trip was very fun and adventurous for us as we did get lost a lot during our explorations of the various cities we were in. However, thats when the maps came in handy, and seldom not. Kart's favorite word throughout the trip was "Dude!" Neha had not seen him use it as much before, and found it funny. Neha would be able to tell a lot of Kart's flatulence stories, but would rather refrain from that!
